Kits can offer a great value. But still visit your local high end audio dealer and just listen to stuff. Most places are cool about it, and you get to hear so much. I got the hear the thiel scs3 this past weekend....amazing speaker.

alright cool. Now, to stray from the topic...........after looking around partexpress and madisound i'm even more curious. How do i know what drivers would be well-suited for midrange duties?? And i notice a lot of pre-made HT speakers have 2 midrange speakers and only 1 tweeter, why is this and what characteristics does it give to the sound it reproduces??

You're speaking of the MTM configurations (or TMM)...it has to do with dispersion.

As far as building goes, the speakers are only as good as there crossover network. So I suggest building some proven designs, or go through Danny at GR Research. With DIY there is a point of no return once you get into the $600-$800 range. There A/V-2 speaker with the sonicap upgrade and BH-5 has been compared to boutique shop speakers costing upwards of $4000. They will run you $495 with both upgrades.
