Any Surround Sound System recommendations?
I dont know much about home audio so i'm asking for some assistance. I'm not looking to spend more than $500 on a system so i want something of just mediocre quality. I dont even know what i'm really looking for so any help is appreciated.

I would go with a yamaha system if $500 is your max price.
Denon, Harmon Kardon, and Onkyo make great receivers, but you'll be hard pressed to build a system with those for $500. |

None that I know of. I do know that for the money, yamaha makes some good equipment. You could always buy a Denon, Onkyo, or Harmon Kardon refurbished receiver and build your own system, but that will get very expensive buying good speakers to finish the system. As far as 7.1 and 5.1 goes, with a properly set up 5.1 system you won't really hear a difference between it and a 7.1 system. When choosing a receiver make sure the back looks more like this rather than this
The first receiver has many more inputs and outputs and also has much better speaker wire interconnects, which, not having those, is a big sign of being a cheap receiver. here's an onkyo 7.1 setup for $550 with free shipping. It's not one of their high end systems, but it'd still be a cut above most others. |

What about this? http://www.crutchfield.com/s_580HT52...0.html?tp=6419
i would feel safer with this one because it has many outstanding reviews. |

I'm sure that would work. It's the same thing, just a model lower. The one I posted was the HTS6200, and the one you posted was the HTS5200.
IMO, I'd go with the HTS6200 over the 5200, but that's just me. It's only $50 more rather than the $200 more it would cost if it wasn't on sale. |

Whatever you decide on if you need to go out of your budget to buy a system over a HTIB (home theater in a box, with the DVD player and speakers usually by sony samsung or whoever) DEFINTLEY DO SO! I think Yamaha has some decent ones.

Yea don't get a home theater in a box with a dvd player/receiver like sony and samsung, they are junk. My samsung 5 disc dvd changer/ receiver just took a **** on me and i've only had it for less than a year. I'd get the 6200 that duster recommeneded over anything else in your price range but best buy has some nice ones for sale, a yamaha, a denon and a klipsch package that seem good for the price.

look into pioneer, they are excellent recivers..
your going to spend 600 on a midline reciver, if you can build you some boxes, usher and dayton make good budget tweeters,midbass/range they ever have prebuilt xovers.. i am going to do 5 usher 7" mids with 5 dayton tweeters and 5 xovers.. it gonna run me 700 total... for 5 nice speakers another 550 for the pioneer VSX-1019AH-K.. excellent mid line reciver.. |
