Car Audio Cutting Out High Volume

Vehicle: 2015 Ford Mustang Convertible
So here is a quick sum up of my eqpt.

Kenwood DDX9903S HeadUnit
Alpine PDX-V9 5 Ch Amp
4 Alpine Type R Speakers
2 Alpine Type R Tweeters
JL Audio 10W3v3-4 4 Ohm Sub

The Amp runs power to everything I had 4g Wire installed.

This was professionally installed.

Problem:
My kenwood HU has a max volume of 40. When I had it first installed it was only able to go to 28 then it would cut off and require me to restart my car to re-engage the amplifier. I adjusted my Equalizer to flat and adjusted a couple other setting and was able to get it to 32 before the issue happens.
They told me the issue is that the amp is picking up distorted signals at higher volumes and going into "protect mode" or something along those lines.

I am not going to even pretend like I know anything about car audio. I do not know anything extra about the system (example: no clue where it is grounded off at).

Is what they are telling me true?
How should I Proceed? (Besides driving the car off a cliff)
