ICS-X8 Firmware update

Hi,
I have had my X8 for about 3 years and I wanted to update the firmware so I could access the App use side of the capability (from iphone 4 which I use as a music storage device in the car).
I downloaded the update 1.4 from Alpine site and extracted it to a freshly formatted (FAT32) USB stick, I connected it to one of the (tried both) USB cables attached the HU and nothing. It is supposed to automatically detect the software and start updating.
I have tried reformatting the stick, re-downloading the software, but nothing seems to work.
There are no other files on the stick apart from the firmware and the folder (RAAG005A) is on the root drive. I used winRAR to extract the files.
The USB cables work as I can plug in an iphone and it recognises the device is there and will play music/video from it.

Has anyone successfully updated the firmware or got any solutions?

Many thanks in advance.
