Bluetooth HF Error 68 on Kenwood head unit

I constantly get an HF Error 68 when my iPhone 5 (and previously 4s) tries to connect audio streaming to my Kenwood KIV-700 via KCA-BT300. Works sometimes, not always.

Have turned off automatic contact syncing, as someone suggested. Any other ideas how to fix?

Is the issue with the head unit or the BT adapter? The Bluetooth connection itself is made, as I can make calls. It's just the audio streaming that does not connect.

Googling turns up responses such as turn off head unit and try again (works sometimes), resetting the head unit (works most of the time, but resetting all my settings is a PITA). Wondering if anyone here has come up with a more permanent solution.
